After Allah created Adam and placed him in Paradise with his wife, Hawwa (Eve), they were allowed to enjoy everything there except one tree. Allah specifically commanded them not to eat from this tree. However, Iblis (Satan) tempted them, making them believe that eating from the tree would bring them closer to Allah or grant them eternal life. Eventually, Adam and Hawwa gave in and ate from the tree, disobeying Allah’s command.
Realizing their mistake, they immediately felt regret and guilt. They turned to Allah with a sincere dua, saying:
رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنْفُسَنَا وَإِنْ لَمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ
Rabbanaa zalamnaaa anfusanaa wa-in lam taghfir lanaa wa tarhamnaa lanakoonanna minal khaasireen
“Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will certainly be among the losers.” (Quran 7:23)
This dua showed their sincere repentance, acknowledging their mistake and asking for Allah’s forgiveness and mercy. Allah accepted their repentance, demonstrating His mercy. The story of this dua teaches us the importance of admitting our mistakes, seeking forgiveness, and turning back to Allah when we go astray.
